Theme Day: Mystery Object

Well, I'm not 100% sure what this is or used for, but I would guess it is for measuring how far the mountains have moved? This mystery object is located in Nevada on the Ruby Mountains. We saw it and figured it was some geological survey marker, but in all reality, I have no idea what it is. 1. If my quick Google search is to be believed, it's the boundary of land ownership. My guess is that it marks the boundary of a National Forest.

  3. Cadestral Survey ... wiki reckons it is to do with the surveying of land to ensure it is taxed correctly. Must be more to it than what Wiki reckons!

  5. They're all over the place. There's one on the hill above my house. I've probably seen 50 in my lifetime.

  6. It is a survey marker.

Section 11, Township 31 North, Range 58 East.

That would be in Sheridan County, Montana, a long, long ways from the Twin Cities.

  7. It was somewhere around 10,500 feet high in the Ruby Mountains located in Nevada. I believe it's the city of Spring Creek, but I'm unsure at that location.

We figured it was something with the US Government obviously, but I hadn't taken the time yet to research it.

I'm glad I used this photo, y'all have given me plenty of information about it.

We also saw several holes where one of these markers used to reside, but had been removed by a hiker I would guess.
