What you're looking at is part of the rail road switching yard in St Paul that runs along Highway 61. On the other side of the control center, out of site, is the Mississippi River. You can see the one car in the photo, this is the employee parking lot, you walk up the stairs and cross over the railroad tracks to the control room. The exact location of this place is almost as far south in St Paul one could get. It's about half mile to a mile north of the St Paul border where Highway 494 and Highway 61 cross. Newport is directly south of this location. Most people who know this area, honestly don't realize this is part of St Paul.

cool colours in the frame. I like the blend of greens, orange, blue all offset by the brown over-bridge.
This is one area of our drive (from St. Michael to CG) that we all seem to enjoy. When the kids hear me say, "Look at the train", they know we're almost to our destination. Also, our children find the box car graffity interesting.
My uncle from CG worked on this railroad for many years.
Thank you for the great post!
Interesting photo. They made use of space with the walkway linking the parking lot to the building, and leaving room for the trains to go under.
I share your sentiment for that part of you and your families drive. It too is one of my favorite places in the Twin Cities to drive along.
The homes along side Highway 61 are very unique looking as well. They might make good photo subjects in the future....
